AUSTIN, TEXAS–The following statement on Senate Bill 30 / House Bill 4806, legislation that would have helped rein in so-called “nuclear verdicts,” failing to pass this legislative session should be attributed to Robert Wood, spokesperson, Texans Against Lawsuit Abuse:

“When lawsuit abuse goes unchallenged, small businesses are threatened, which often leads to job cuts, increased consumer costs, a reduction in product innovation, and even closure. It’s unfortunate that Texas lawmakers could not pass a common-sense solution to address ‘nuclear verdicts.’

“Today, Texas is home to more ‘nuclear verdicts’ than any other state in the nation. Court awards that top $10 million are far too common in Texas. In 2023 alone, six of the top ten verdicts in the country were handed down in Texas, totaling over $200 million.

Texans Against Lawsuit Abuse will continue to educate Texans on the cost and consequences of ‘nuclear verdicts and other questionable practices in our civil justice system.”
