AUSTIN, TEXASThe following statement after the Texas House Judiciary & Civil Jurisprudence (JCJ) Committee passed Senate Bill 30 by Sen. Charles Schwertner and Rep. Greg Bonnen, legislation that would rein in so-called “nuclear verdicts,” should be attributed to Robert Wood, spokesperson, Texans Against Lawsuit Abuse:

“Texas is one step closer to reining in ‘nuclear verdicts,” an important step to ensure our courts are used for justice, not greed. The House passage of Senate Bill 30 ensures that lawsuit abuse will not go unchallenged in the State of Texas.

“Today, Texas is home to more ‘nuclear verdicts’ than any other state in the nation. Court awards that top $10 million are far too common in Texas. In 2023 alone, six of the top ten verdicts in the country were handed down in Texas, totaling over $200 million.

“Senate Bill 30 represents a straightforward fix to this costly problem by stopping the inflation of medical damages, giving jurors clearer standards for non-economic damages, and encouraging doctors to treat accident victims. We urge Gov. Greg Abbott to sign this bill into law.”
